Rebecca Salmond Marlborough

The Odyssey Marlborough vineyard is unique and very picturesque. As one of the more elevated vineyards in the region it enjoys suberb views of both the Brancott and Wairau Valleys and over onto the Cook Strait.

The site was selected specifically for producing top quality Pinot Noir. Soil type is described as permeable silt loam over clay loam subsoils with an impermeable hard pan at 1m. The site is on a North Easterly sloping aspect which is good because we capture the morning sun.

Rainfall in the Southern Hills is low at under 650mm per year. Rebecca Salmond has built a dam to catch runoff during the winter should summer irrigation be required.

Planting to date includes 3500 Sauvignon Blanc plants on Scharzman and 3309 rootstock. Spacings are close at 1.8m *2m row and all pruning/harvesting is done by hand. 3800 Pinot Gris plants are planted on Riparia rootstock and at even closer spacings.

The Reserve Chardonnay is hand harvested and the Rebecca Salmond Chardonnay is harvested by machine. Harvest dates are toward the end of March and even early April.

Rebecca Salmond Gisborne

Odyssey Wines sources 20 tonnes of Mendoza Chardonnay grapes from the Kawitiri vineyard, Hexton situated in Gisborne's Golden Triangle. The soils are heavier silt loam with clay and require no summer irrigation. Crops are managed to expose the bunches to as much air flow as possible during the summer months. The vines are 20 years old.
